Guest Artist Program
About the Guest Artist Program 2011-12
We plan to invite six Guest Artists to work at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park during the 2011-12 year. Two of the Guest Artists were selected from applications, and the other four were invited after discussions among the staff of the Institute of Ceramic Studies and the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art. Considering the present state of ceramic art, we felt that it was important to invite artists with outstanding artistry and technical skill from a wide range of genres who could emphasize the diversity of ceramics. We believe that such artists will provide a better experience for the Studio Artists they share studio space with, as well as the members of the local ceramics industry. The Guest Artists invited this year may seem to have a tendency to create vessels. Kato Kiyoshi pursues tradition as a member of the Japan Traditional Handicraft Association, while Yamada Akira, including his work at the Mon Studio, bases his works on the philosophy of craft. Gwyn Hanssen Pigott also makes vessels, and her work is connected to the concepts of Bernard Leach and Lucie Rie.
Leiko Ikemura is the only Guest Artist to have a background in painting. By observing the way in which a modern fine artist works with clay, we look forward to discovering new creative and expressive possibilities.
