Invitation of Guest Artists 2021-Application for Guest Artists


Since opening in 1992, the Institute of Ceramic Studies has been providing for those pursuing a pottery making career and for professional ceramic artists with wealth of knowledge and achievement. Why not take this opportunity to make another leap forward, through exchanges with fellow ceramists and excellent artists, in liberal and creative environment? Since 1992 to 2019, we had hosted over 1300 artists from 55 countries around the world. In 2010 we expand our program to include some Guest Artist accepted from public applications.

The application rule of the Guest Artists for the 2021 fiscal year is as below.

Guest Artist for 2021 (April, 2021~March, 2022)


1. Number of the Guest Artists 
about 2 people


2. Qualifications 
Artists who are over 20 years old


3. Staying Period 
April 1st, 2021 ~ March 31st, 2022 ※Artists who can stay over 1 month to 1 year

The office and dormitory will be closed for the New Years holidays between December 29th – January 4th.


4. Application Period 
September 1st, 2020 ~ October 31st, 2020 at 17:00 in Japan time

Notification of the result: Before December 27th, 2020

If you are planning to apply for both studio artist and guest artist, please apply for both from each link.

〔Applicants Guidelines〕
(1) We will make the selection based on the material that you will submit. Please fill in as detail as possible.
(2) Please make sure to provide all three choices of your desired period of stay.
(3) If you wish to apply from outside the web, please contact the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. (here after referred to as SCCP)
(4) Please use JPEG files for all image data such as your portraits and photographs of works. The file size should be 1.5MB or less.
(5) Please use only alphanumeric characters, hyphens (-), underscores (_), and periods (.) for file names of all data such as your
      portraits, photographs of works, and PDF files.


6. Selection 
The selection of Guest Artists will be conducted by a selection committee that includes outside experts.


7. Other Condition

(2) Travel expenses
The SCCP will pay for one economy class round-trip ticket between the Artist’s nearest airport to Kansai Int. Airport and for the transportation from the airport to Shigaraki.

(3) Materials
The SCCP will pay for materials up to 100,000yen.

(4) Firing
The SCCP will pay for firing costs up to 110,000yen.

(5) Works
The Guest Artists will be expected to donate two finished works to the SCCP.
Works to be donated will be determined in consultation with the staff.

(6) Exhibition and Slide Lectures
The Guest Artist will be expected to have exhibition and conduct lectures, workshops, etc. for the general public.


8. Expenses 
Dormitory: 25,100 yen / one month
Bedding: 4,960 yen / one month(160 yen / one night)

-If you use the air conditioner provided in your room, you will be charged for the additional cost at the end of your stay.




1. Apply 
Confirmation e-mail will be automatically sent to you after successfully submitting your application.
※If you do not receive confirmation mail, please refer to the 〔Applicants Guidelines〕.


2. Selection 
The selection of Guest Artists will be conducted by a selection committee that includes outside experts.


3. Notification of Result 
We will send the selection results to artists via letters and e-mails, before December 27th, 2020.


4. Schedule adjustment 
As a result of the selection, artists who has been approved as a Guest Artist can make schedule adjustments with staffs by e-mail.
By studios and accommodation situation, you may necessarily not afford a stay at the stay period of your first choice.


5. Certification 
After the schedule is adjusted, we will be issue certification and other documents to accepted artists.


6. Stay start 
Artists start to stay by their adjusted schedule.
