Application for the Studio Artists



Since opening in 1992, the Institute of Ceramic Studies has been providing for those pursuing a pottery making career and for professional ceramic artists with wealth of knowledge and achievement. Why not take this opportunity to make another leap forward, through exchanges with fellow ceramists and excellent artists, in liberal and creative environment? Since 1992 to 2020, we had hosted over 1388 artists from 55 countries around the world.

※Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, we will prioritize the acceptance of artists who are planning to participate from foreign artists whose stay has been postponed, so we will not recruit new artists from foreign countries. The following information is for reference only.


Studio Artist   (updated April 2021)

2. Qualifications 
Artists who are over 20 years old


3. Staying Period 
April 1st ~ March 31st

-Artists who can stay over 1 month to 1 year
-The office and dormitory will be closed for New Years holidays, between December 29th-January 4th.


4. Application Period 
September 1st~October 31st at 17:00 in Japan time

Notification of the Result: Before December 28th
*In case there will not be full our capacity after the first selection, We will take the applicants any time after December 28th.


5. Application method 
Online application. Please apply by following the steps on the link below.
If you are planning to apply for both studio artist and guest artist, please apply for both from each link.


〔Applicants Guidelines〕
(1) We will make the selection based on the material that you will submit. Please fill in as detailed as possible.
(2) Please make sure to provide all three choices of your desired period of stay.
(3) If you wish to apply from outside the web, please contact the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. (here after referred to as SCCP)
(4) Please use JPEG files for all image data such as your portraits and photographs of works. The file size should be 1.5MB or less.
(5) Please use only alphanumeric characters, hyphens (-), underscores (_), and periods (.) for file names of all data such as your
   portraits, photographs of works, and PDF files.


6. Selection 
The seledction of Studio Artists will be conducted by the SCCP.


7. Expenses 
Studio Rental: 36,600 JPY / one month
Dormitory:       19,300 JPY / one month
Bedding :            4,960 JPY / one month(160 yen / one night)

-Material costs, firing costs, travel expenses, and other living expenses are not included in the above costs.
-If you use the air conditioner provided in your room, you will be charged for the additional cost at the end of every months and end of your stay.


8. Others 
We may ask you to hold an exhibition at the SCCP or in the exhibition space in Shigaraki during your stay.
We may ask you to give a slide lecture and to host workshop for the general public.
Depending on your work we may ask you to donate to the SCCP.
In that case, works to be donated will be determined in consultation with the staff.





1. Apply 
Confirmation e-mail will be automatically sent to you after successfully submitting your application.
※If you do not receive confirmation mail, please refer to the 〔Applicants Guidelines〕.


2. Selection 
Make the selection by the Studio Artist selection committee of the SCCP.


3. Notification of Result 
We will send the selection results to artists via letters and e-mails, before December 28th.


4. Schedule adjustment 
As a result of the selection, artists who has been approved as a Studio Artist can make schedule adjustments with staffs by e-mail.
By studios and accommodation situation, you may necessarily not afford a stay at the stay period of the first choice.


5. Certification 
After the schedule is adjusted, we will be issue certification and other documents to accepted artists.


6. Stay start 
Artists start to stay by their adjusted schedule.
