茨城県陶芸美術館主任学芸員等を経て、現在、多摩美術大学をメインに愛知県立芸術大学・名古屋芸術大学・東北芸術工科大学・京都造形芸術大学・沖縄県立芸術大学・金沢美術工芸大学大学院で工芸史、陶芸史、論文研究、作品講評を担当。
また、テート・セント・アイブス『Kosho Ito Virus』展(2002 年)を皮切りに、国際交流基金主催海外巡回展『Handcrafted Form』(2005年-)、SOFAシカゴ(2007年)、第5回韓国・世界陶磁ビエンナーレ2009 (諮問委員)、米国スミス・カレッジ『Touch Fire』(2009 年)、フランクフルト工芸美術館講演「Creative Tradition」(2011年)、台湾・新北市鶯歌陶瓷博物館『The Imagination of Blue and white』(2015年)など、国内外の美術館、大学等で展覧会監修、図録執筆、講演を行う。一方いばらきデザインセレクション審査員(2007年~)、伊丹国際クラフト展審査員長(2012~14年)を務めるなどクラフト、陶磁デザインの発展、関連する地場産業の育成にも尽力。
主な著書に、『Fired Earth, Woven Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics and Bamboo Art』(ボストン美術館、2013年)、共訳書に『バーナード・リーチ再考』(2007年)。『陶説』にて展評を、『陶工房』に「陶芸最前線」を連載中。2015年5月からは毎日新聞に「工芸の地平から」を隔月連載している。

After working as Chief Curator at Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Ceramic Art, Todate Kazuko is currently based at Tama Art University, while also teaching at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, Nagoya University of Arts, Tohoku University of Art and Design, Kyoto University of Art and Design, Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, and the graduate school of Kanazawa University of Art. She teaches craft history, ceramic art history, essay research, and art evaluation.

Todate is also active internationally as a curator, writer, and speaker. She has been involved in curating exhibitions including “Kosho Ito Virus” at Tate St Ives (2002), “Handcrafted Form,” a traveling exhibition produced by the Japan Foundation (2005- ), SOFA Chicago (2007), the 5th World Ceramic Biennale in Korea (advisory committee, 2009), “Touch Fire” at Smith College in the U.S. (2009), “Creative Tradition,” a speech at the Frankfurt Museum of Craft (2011), and “The Imagination of Blue and White” at the Yingge Ceramics Museum in New Taipei City. She is also active in encouraging the development of local industry in relation to craft and ceramic design, serving as a juror for Ibaraki Design Selection (2007- ) and head juror of the Itami International Craft Exhibition.

Among her publications are “Fired Earth, Woven Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics and Bamboo Art,” (Boston Museum, 2013), and she co-authored “Reconsidering Bernard Leach” (2007). She regularly contributes exhibition reviews to “Tosetsu” and writes the “Front Line in Ceramic Art” column for “Tokobo.” Since May 2015 she has written the bimonthly column “From the Horizon of Craft” for the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.
