Research on Artist-in-Residence Management

Since 2015, the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park has been promoting a global network of residences from various countries on the theme of ceramics. In 2015, as the 25th anniversary project of SCCP we held the “25th Anniversary Commemorative Event International Ceramic Art Workshop and Symposium, From the perspective of the Artists in Residence”. Through this event we overviewed the result of the AIR Program at SCCP.
In 2016, we have cooperated with Union of Kansai Governments and organized the International Symposium – Kansai Artists in Residence in Shigaraki “Possibilities and Assessments of Artists in Residence Programs”.
In addition, with the support of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “International Cultural Exchange Promotion Project through Support for Artist-in-Residence Activities” from FY2016, the SCCP’s Artist-in-Residence International Cultural Exchange Promotion Project was launched. The “Artists-in-Residence Reserch Meeting” was set up to conduct research on residence management.
Through these projects, we solved the management issues of the residence program and created examples of evaluation criteria, and this led us to think about the sustainability of the residence business from the viewpoints of economy, regional revitalization, evaluation, tourism, design, etc. Through this, a network of residence institutions in Japan was established.
