Contemporary American ceramics owes much of his existence to the Japanese ceramic tradition. In the early 20th century Shoji Hamada made Japanese ceramics techniques popular in the United States. He influenced many artists, such as Paul Soldner, Peter Voulkos, and Peter Callas, considered the fathers of contemporary United Sates ceramics. These artists drew from Japanese techniques, imagery, and history to build the foundation for American sculptural ceramics. As a student in the United States I learned about these men and about the long and beautiful Japanese ceramic tradition. The two are intertwined and inseparable in my mind. I could think of no other country more suitable than Japan for my first residency.

When applying for residencies I observed that all of these artists whom I admire came to work at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. It was as a place where they could connect to their Japanese influences but also create new work that could help move forward not only American ceramics but world ceramics. Throughout my career my work has been inspired by these men and by Japanese ceramics. I aspire to one day have my artwork recognized in the forefront of the ceramics world. The SCCP is where I can begin my journey to that goal. As I see more of this park and learn more of Japanese culture and techniques from this fine institution, and my fellow resident artists, I believe my work can evolve into something truly influential.
